Local SEO for Tradies: How to Actually Get Found on Google
Local SEO for a trade business isn’t complicated. It’s mostly a handful of things done properly, not a long list of tricks.
Search “plumber near me” or “electrician [suburb]” and you’ll see two things: a map with three businesses pinned, and a list of website results below it. Getting into either of those isn’t about gaming an algorithm — it’s about giving Google clear, consistent, genuine signals about who you are and where you work.
Start with Google Business Profile, not the website
Before anything else, claim and properly fill out your Google Business Profile — correct category, service area, phone number, and real photos of your work. For most local “near me” searches, this listing matters more than your website ranking does, because it’s what shows up in the map pack most people click first.
The single biggest thing that moves this: genuine reviews, asked for consistently after finished jobs, not in a batch once a year. A steady trickle of real reviews with your business responding to them does more for local ranking than almost anything else on this list.
What the website itself needs to do
- Name your suburbs and service area explicitly on the page — not just in a footer, in actual sentences. Google matches search intent to specific, named text.
- Have a dedicated page per core service if you offer several distinct ones (e.g. blocked drains vs. hot water vs. gas fitting) rather than one page trying to cover everything at once.
- Load fast on a phone. Most local searches happen on mobile, and Google factors page speed into ranking — a slow site is working against you before a visitor even reads a word.
- Be consistent with your business name, address and phone number everywhere it appears online — directories, social profiles, the website itself. Inconsistent details across the web quietly undermine local trust signals.
What’s not worth your time
Keyword-stuffing suburb names into invisible text, buying backlinks from unrelated sites, or submitting your business to fifty low-quality directories overnight — none of this helps, and some of it can actively hurt you. Local SEO rewards genuine, consistent signals over time far more than any shortcut.
If you want the fundamentals built properly from the start rather than bolted on later, this is exactly what we build into every tradie website we deliver — service area, structured service pages and technical performance handled from day one.
Common questions
How long does local SEO take to show results?
Meaningfully longer than people hope — typically a few months of consistent signals (reviews, content, technical basics) before ranking movement is noticeable, though Google Business Profile improvements can show up faster than organic website ranking does.
Do I need a blog to rank locally?
Not necessarily. For most trades, well-structured service and location pages do more work than a blog. A blog helps more with broader informational searches than with direct “near me” commercial intent.
Does my website need to be listed in every local directory?
No — a handful of relevant, reputable ones (Google Business Profile, key industry directories) matter far more than volume. Consistency of your business details across them matters more than the number of listings.
